Q. I really like this kernel and like the stock Android 2.2 interface but is it possible to use this kernel without a custom rom? It says it works on Asop so is stock 2.2 asop?
A. I cant speak for the Kernel but yes ASOP is another name for a stock android with out any custom UIs such as SENSE or TouchWiz

Q. I have a Virgin Mobile Optimus V and it's an android. I know that rooting is the same concept of jailbreaking an iPod, or an iPhone.

a)you can remove the system apps which came preinstalled in your phone
b)u can overclock your cpu.,,,, lg optimus has 600mhz processor which overclocked upto 806mhz
c)u can access various android system files
d)you can install new kernels in your optimus v,,i.e if you install the mik-os kernel, then the cpu spike problem can be removed(when playing games the phone lags when u touch the screen)
e)by rooting, you can install various custom ROMS(android versions) in your device.,,,android gingerbread 2.3 versions are also available,,,,check out the xda-developers forum

Q. I really want to learn how to root my Android device, but everyone says it costs something for the kernel. How could I do this for free?
A. Rooting is completely free just google your make and model for instructions. Phandroid, droidforums or androidforums are all reliable sites with good dev communities.
