How do you study a new language?

Q. I am trying to learn Tagalog online for now as I do not have materials at the moment. I am on a few sites at the moment but I don't what to do with them. How do I go about writing notes and putting them on flash cards? Do I write the basics first? What exactly do I do?

A. http://www.stars21.com/translator/english_to_filipino.html here's a good translator site, grammar however is not always correct.

Do you have an iPod/ iPad / iPhone or Android phone? There are many Tagalog Apps to be downloaded there.

Also, do you have any Filipino friends? They would be your best source to go to for help, they could write you a list of words and definitions and you could go about turning them into flash cards.

Im married to a Filipino and can speak Tagalog and am currently working on learning Ilokano.

When your more advanced a piece of advice is get a Tagalog newspaper or news article online and read it out loud for 30mins-1 hour a day to help you get familiar with the words and pronunciation. Also try watching some Tagalog movies. Good luck. You can email me if you want for some help.

Any software for J2ME mobile to learn Chinese?
Q. Hi.
I have a Nokia 2690 and i'm looking for a Java app for my mobile that could help me learn Chinese language. I have to start learning Chinese from the very beginning, i.e., the alphabets and their sounds.

A. Interestingly, not until recently did I changed my mobile phone from Nokia to Android and the one reason is the symbian os can't offer rich various Englsh-English advanced dictionaries, such as longman and oxford.
But don't be discouraged, there are also two useful English-Chinese/Chinese -English softwares of dictionaries availiable to you--"Youdao" and "jin shan ci ba",which are also commonly used by us Chinese students to learn English.^0^
---------------------------------------------
I will give you 3 links,,the first will link to the download webpage of "Youdao"(æé) ,and the last two links are the websites that may be helpful for you Chinese language learners. As for"jin shan ci ba"(éå±±è¯é¸ï¼ï¼it's not availiable to download on its page and must download it through the Chinese symbian bbs,so it's difficult for you.
But you can feel free to IM me:andyjiang868@ymail.com or just Email me:473606535@qq.com
Good luck!

What are the detrimental effects of the overflowing amounts of information and knowledge in our society?
Q. as in individual to individual.

is there any correlation to the fact that education levels were much higher back a few centuries ago when it was harder to get hold of books and knowledge?

A. Read the book "Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything". There you will have observations, like when the number of policemen on the streets has risen, the crime rate has also given rise. It's the same observation like the accessibility of books and quality of education. No cause-effect relation.

Read the book "Brave new world". It's a fiction book this time, but it will answer a question: "how does the new media influence us?". Irrelevancy makes us (as a society and as an individual) dumber.

Then, you could check the contents of the books you are talking about. 20 years ago people learned how to SOLVE math problems, while now they learn how to try which choice is correct in questions from the tests.

Then, you could try to observe what does the new technology mean for schools. iPods, iPads, iPhones, laptops, androids, WiFi, iTunes, Facebook, Twitter, Farmville. And absolutely no iEducation. Why learn when everything is accessible through Wikipedia, the Calculator program, Yahoo (I meant Google)? WHAT to learn? The countries of the world? Wikipedia has a list. Their shapes? Open Google Earth and see the shapes. Surface of the triangle (given 4 choices)? Oh, look, I got a geometry program that shows me the surface, so it's C. Cool, I got an A+! Physics? That's for dorks and nerds. We're cool, like Lil Wayne. English? WTF is that? My brothaz aint diggin dat s#it.

I love technology, and I love to use it, but I want my kids to learn to do something without it, before using it at every step, or they'll become mindless zombies.
