For Verizon Wireless, can I get an android phone without the data plan?

Q. I want to get an android phone, but I don't really need the data plan as long as I have wifi on it. Also can I get an unlocked android phone and still avoid getting data plan?

A. Sure you can. You just can't activate it :P

To answer your question, no, every carrier requires a data plan to activate any smartphone, including Android.

Is it possible to use an android phone on the sprint network in Europe?
Q. I'm heading to Europe next week and I'm trying to figure out a good way to call back to the states without buying an extra phone. I have an android phone, the Samsung Moment. Are there any apps that I can use Voip with to call over wifi provided in the hostels we're staying at?

A. The only VOIP app that works with Android right now is Skype, and AFAIK, it's only available on Verizon's devices.

Sprint doesn't have a network in Europe. Sprint phones use CDMA network technology, which is not used in most of the rest of the world. You may be able to roam on European networks with your phone, but it's going to cost you big time. In fact, you'd be advised to not even turn the phone on after you leave the US, because you'll get hit with incredible roaming fees.

If you had a GSM phone, you'd be able to use a local SIM card for phone and text services, and whatever available wi-fi there is for data. But you don't have that option. This is why I try to talk people out of using CDMA services...we're the only country that uses them, practically.

If you have to make calls while you're there, buy a cheap GSM cell phone on eBay (or ask someone with an account on T-Mobile or AT&T is they have an old phone they can loan you). You'd have to get the phone unlocked, but that's pretty easy, and you can then get a local SIM and call and text where you need.

Just remember, overseas and international cell calls are really, really expensive. Avoid doing it unless you absolutely have to.

What phone companies offer android phones?
Q. I was wondering if its possible to get an android phone from bell since thats who Im with for a service provider and I am on a contract nor am I allowed to get a different phone

A. It will be T-Mobile exclusively offering the HTC G1 as of right now. It is believed that T-Mobile will offer unlock codes to customers of 90 days or more if asked. So for that reason you will see unlocked phones for sale. It's doubtful that T-Mobile or HTC will offer this phone to buy direct and already unlocked for quite a while. Check ebay if you don't want to go with T-Mobile. You might also find unlock codes out there eventually once hackers get ahold of the phone. It didn't take long before the iPhone was cracked, I'm sure the android phone will be easier.

There are also android phones being developed by Samsung and possibly other companies. No news as to when these will be released or who will carry them. I expect the HTC G1 model will be the only one for quite a while.
