How do you optimize your website for Smart Phones?

Q. We will be using QR codes to bridge the gap from print to web. Need to understand how to optimize website pages for smart phones. Any thoughts?

A. There are PHP scripts available that allow you to detect which kind of mobile device a person is using. Google it. You can use that knowledge to redirect the person to a page made specifically for their device. Each device has a different screen size, so try to take at least the major ones into account...you could make a page for iPhones, Blackberries, and some of the major Android phones. Set strict page dimensions that coincide with the screen size. It's okay to have it longer than the size of the screen, but make sure it's not wider...people don't like to scroll sideways!
The page should be fairly simple with not too many options...use large buttons, and make the most popular features very prominent and easy to access...

Q. on my laptop theres a sticker that says ''satellite l645d, scan this qr code with your smartphone''. what do i need to download to do this (i have a htc aria) and what will i be able to do after i do?

A. You should have Google Goggles already installed on your phone.
Tap the Goggles app to open it and it uses your camera to take a picture of and analyze the code, it will then give you info about the code you are scanning.
