For Verizon Wireless, can I get an android phone without the data plan?

Q. I want to get an android phone, but I don't really need the data plan as long as I have wifi on it. Also can I get an unlocked android phone and still avoid getting data plan?

A. Sure you can. You just can't activate it :P

To answer your question, no, every carrier requires a data plan to activate any smartphone, including Android.

Is it possible to use an unlocked android phone in Europe?
Q. I was wondering if I could purchase an unlocked phone, say the galaxy s from att, then use it on a Vodafone plan. Both use SIM cards so that would work but I was wondering if the 3G would work or data. Thanks

A. If the phone is really unlocked, then it can work with any service/ you can use it around the world.

What does it mean to have an unlocked cell phone?
Q. I am looking to buy my husband a cell phone from ebay and a lot of the phones they offer are unlocked. Also I'm not sure if some of those phones are smart phones or not, we have a regular plan. Does having an unlocked phone allow us to have a smartphone with a regular phone plan?? What exactly does it mean to have an unlocked phone?

A. many phones are tied to, and branded by the providers who sell them, like Verizon and Sprint., which means if you buy a phone with the Verizon logo on it, or the Sprint logo, then that phone will only work with those networks..verizon phones don't work on sprint networks and vice versa.

it also means when you come across a plan with cheaper rates than verizon and sprint, like with boost mobile or tracfone or cricket, you can't use that verizon branded phone on the cheaper network.

when a phone is unlocked, that means you can use that phone on any network you wish. The unlocked phone will now accept and register a SIM card from whatever network you choose to use it on, except for Tracfone and Net10, which still only allows its own phones to use their network.

basically, a smartphone is run with an operating system, like linux, windows mobile, or android...there are many models out that claim to be smartphones, but a smartphone can run applications; not just silly games, light tricks and vibrator gags, but applications like barcode scanning, office utilities, pedometer utilities and the like..almost any phone these days can offer maps and directions.

smartphones usually require a data usage plan...even when unlocked, if the provider recognizes the phone as a smartphone, it will require you run it with a data plan...smartphones spend a lot of time on the internet, and they require a lot of time downloading and updating applications...most smartphones are made to stay connected to the internet, and to leave sleep mode whenever the phone feels its necessary, or whenever the apps you download feel its necessary.

thats really the main difference about smartphones.: with their apps, they stay in constant contact with the network and internet, it is only when you personally modify the phones operating system, by rooting it, that you can stop the phone from keeping an open two way contact between itself and the internet.
